There are all kinds of potential widgets... here are a few that you may already be familiar with:

1. Site statistics/counters - They often have an embedded link back to the provider or to a 3rd party website (aka advertiser).

2. Site Seals (e.g. Security); Site Awards (e.g. Best XYZ blog); Badges (e.g. Member of XYZ Association).

3. Social sharing buttons/scripts.

4. Oatmeal.com graphics.

The idea of using widgets specifically for building SEO value has mostly come & gone, but if you have a great idea and the widget is highly useful/used by your site visitors then you should still see positive results. Just be careful to ensure that your widget is actually related to the site you're linking to or you could get the backside of Google's right-hand.

Everything sounds like great information - but I am unsure of what you mean by "create useful tools and widgets". What type of widgets are you talking about? Maybe this is obvious, but I am not sure what that means.....?

At least with the "Google/Panda/Farmer update" this should stop unscrupulous "SEO Experts" getting their clients top rankings within Google. Weed out all "Link Farms" which these "SEO Experts" get these poor quality back links for their client.
