At first glance, finding the right niche to blog about seems like an easy task.  All you have to do is find something that you are interested in and can write intelligently about and you’ve got yourself a blog. No problem right?  Well sometimes, finding the right niche can be a pain.  The most common question that comes with this has to be:

Should I blog about one specific thing or many different things?

Some may argue that you should blog about only one specific thing and not deviate from that one topic. While this is true in a lot of ways, if you are someone that has many different hobbies or someone that is interested in many different things limiting yourself to one specific topic might not be the best thing for you. Granted the best thing to do is to have many different blogs set up for all your different interests but not everyone has the ability/funds/time to run multiple blogs. If you have a lot of things to talk about, think of creative ways to tie the topics together. Also, be sure to get a domain name that fits your spectrum of topics. Don’t get a domain that is fitting for a blog about music lovers and all you talk about is your dog.

Should I Have One Blog or Multiple Blogs?

One thing I like about having multiple blogs is that it opens up possibilities of linking to those other blogs from my general blog. While it may not pass a lot of value to those niche blogs I am still linking to them and linking to them in a good way, not in a spammy way. With a general topic blog, I am free to voice more of my opinion on a subject as opposed to a niche blog I might be forced to remain indifferent on a subject.

If you are going to go the route of a niche specific blog, be sure to find a niche you know about and a niche that you won’t get tired of updating with content. It is very important that you continually add content to your niche blog while making sure that the content is insightful and useful.

Are You Ready to Select a Niche for Your Blog?

So how do you find that right niche? Well what do you love doing? What do you love talking to other people about? If you were to meet someone for the first time, what would you feel comfortable discussing with them? What are you passionate about? Chances are, these topics will turn into successful blog posts for you as long as you blog about something you love.

If you aren’t necessarily passionate about a specific topic, you could always go the route of finding the niche that would make you the most money from ads, affiliates, etc but the only way to make money from it is if you are constantly updating the content on the blog.  Can you stay focused on that topic you care little about except that it makes you money? You may find that you will generate more money on a topic that you enjoy talking about over a topic you are forcing yourself to talk about just so you can get your ad revenue up.

Keep all these things in mind when looking to start your blog, I know from experience it is so much easier to run a blog and/or contribute to a blog that has a topic that I care about and like to talk about.
