There are currently only 3 major search engines  – these include Google, Microsoft’s New Bing, and Yahoo. Each of these engines shares their data and search results with other partners (ie: Google -> AOL), but in general, these are the primary 3 engines feeding most other search engines.

By no means does this include all of the search engines out there, but it covers the majority of the traffic-generating search engines. The others are far behind in terms of the number of daily users and queries.

Other search engines might include: metacrawlers/metasearchs, news, pay-per-click, shopping, multimedia, specialty, country-specific or kids only search engines.

A successful search engine plan, depending on the scope and subject matter of your website, should include a varied mix of all types of search engines.
